Course Redesign

Course redesign is the process of redesigning an entire course (not just individual classes or sections) to achieve better learning outcomes and lower costs by taking advantage of the capabilities of technology. Course redesign is not just about putting courses online. It is about rethinking the way we deliver instruction, especially large-enrollment core courses, in light of the possibilities that new technology offers. Anyone interested in improving student results is encouraged to use these resources and connect with colleagues.

The leader in providing leadership in Course Redesign is the National Center for Academic Transformation: www.thencat.org. The NCAT is an independent, not-for-profit organization whose research-based methodology has produced remarkable results in learning gains, retention, and cost savings since 1999: http://www.thencat.org/whoweare.html NCAT's goal is to increase quality and improve efficiency in large-enrollment introductory courses in many disciplines.

Pearson Education has been an active member of NCAT's Corporate Associates Program since the fall of 2004 and has offered a number of discipline-specific workshops in Course Redesign featuring both NCAT staff and NCAT Redesign Scholars. Pearson has also worked with NCAT staff in the development and dissemination of research that highlights the impact of its products in supporting the principles of Course Redesign and improved student outcomes. Focusing initially on its market-leading MyMathLab offering, Pearson has extended its activities with NCAT to embrace a broad range of disciplines, including economics, chemistry, physics, biology, psychology, English, and Spanish.

Redesign Alliance (an NCAT program)

The Redesign Alliance is a national member organization of institutions, companies and organizations whose mission is to advance the concept of course redesign throughout higher education to increase student success and access while containing or reducing instructional costs. The Redesign Alliance pursues this mission by creating a community of higher education institutions and others who are committed to and experienced with large-scale course redesign.

Colleagues Committed to Redesign (C2R) program (an NCAT program)

C2R is a three-year program to engage sixty new institutions in large-scale course redesign supported by the Fund for the Improvement of Post-Secondary Education (FIPSE.) Under the umbrella of the Redesign Alliance, NCAT is bringing four-person teams from sixty institutions together with NCAT staff and Redesign Scholars at a series of disciplinary institutes. The institutes introduce the teams to the NCAT methodology, share strategies and techniques for successful course redesign, and help them develop plans for course redesigns on their home campuses. NCAT supports collaboration and consultation among NCAT staff, Redesign Scholars, and institutional teams to help them apply what was learned at the institutes on campus and to replicate prior successes.
